Not as well known as some Caribbean destinations, Belize is in Central America near both Mexico and Guatemala. It's actually a marvelous vacation choice, as the friendly Creoles making up most of the population will welcome you with open arms. Some vacationers haven't fared so well at other Caribbean holiday spots. English is the language of choice in Belize, making it more comfortable for those who feel unsettled when not surrounded by people speaking in their native tongue. Some westerners have a bit of trouble adjusting to the relaxed and laid back natives, however. No one is watching the clock in this friendly locale. Belize offers all kind of accommodation, resorts, hotels, even budget hotels. It is neither inexpensive as some of the other destinations of Central America nor is it too expensive. In fact it is okay for all kind of tourists to stay here. Belize is great for the outdoor lover. You'll find protected natural habitats, as well as coral reefs and rainforests. Fish and mammals abound so nature lovers will be in their element. If archeology is your passion you won't want to miss the ancient Mayan ruins. You can schedule day trips with tour guide agencies and learn much about the meanings of the ruins as well as their rich history. Not to be missed is Lamanai a Mayan site with approximately 60 structures dating from 1500 BC. It was a thriving culture until the Spanish landed. Visiting this site will involve a 90 minute boat ride. Along the way you will see crocodiles and an abundant display of bird species. Another archeological site rich in history is Xunantunich. If you would like to spend some time checking out the underwater world of Belize, be sure to do some snorkelling or scuba diving at the Cayes and the Belize Reef. The Cayes is the longest reef in the Western Hemisphere and boasts many species of tropical fish along with the stunning and colorful reef. You will wear shorts, t-shirts, and bathing suits year round in Belize, especially during the summer months. Pack a sweater or two as the evenings cool off in the winter. In general though, the climate is hot and humid, like most tropical areas. To get to Belize you can travel to the international airport in Belize City from several major airports in the United States as well as from most Central American cities. The best time to go to Belize is from November to May or June. July to November is hurricane season so you may be tempting fate. In addition, the temperatures and humidity during the summer and fall months can be almost unbearable, especially if you have your heart set on visiting some archaeological sites. Be sure to consider a visit to the small but beautiful country of Belize. It offers a variety of activities including just soaking up the sun at the beach, exploring a terrific underwater paradise, and seeing some amazing history created by its original citizens.
