The state of Alaska is located in the northernmost and largest part of the country. Reaching out into the Artic Ocean, this state is divided from Russia by the Bering Strait. In addition, Alaska boasts one of the longest rivers in the entire North American continent called the Yukon. Alaska is the most northern state this country has to offer and it reaches into the Artic Ocean, plus it has the longest river in North America called the Yukon. History tells us that Alaska was discovered in 1741 by Vitus Bering and it is true that the Russian tsar Peter the Great commissioned Bering to sail north through the Bering Strait to the Artic in 1725, which he did. Due to an ill fated storm and fog in the Bering Strait, he didn't see the North American country to the East. By the 1890s, the Klondike gold rush occurred, which doubled the population in Alaska's capital. Then by 1900 during the peak of the gold rush era, over $22 million of gold was panned. However, production of gold stopped in 1966 at which time $220 million of gold had been panned over the years! In June, 1741, when Vitus Bering sailed again and sighted land southeast Alaska. Over the next 100 years the Russians learned all they could about the resources of Alaska that could be turned into economic profit. For most of the time Russia was in Alaska, they exploited most of the fur-bearing sea and land animals. The fur trade between Russia and Alaska was big and it made many Russians very rich. Some people will visit Alaska to hike, backpack, or camp. However, other favorite activities include sea kayaking where you can get up-close to all types of sea life, guided glacier tours, or, enjoy a day trying your own hand panning for gold. Of course, one of the things Alaska is most famous for is the King salmon fishing. With more than 586,000 square miles of gorgeous land, you will fall in love with all Alaska has to offer.Most people who have spent time in Alaska will tell you that when rating this part of the world on a scale of one to ten, it would receive a 20 or better.
