Australia : P e o p l e  &  C u l t u r e

history and culture of Australia

» Much of Australia 's culture is derived from European and more recently American roots, but distinctive Australian features have evolved from the environment, aboriginal culture, and the influence of Australia 's neighbors. The vigor and originality of the arts in Australia —films, opera, music, painting, theater, dance, and crafts—are achieving international recognition.

»
The original culture of Australia can only be surmised: cultural patterns among the remote descendants of the first Australians cannot be assumed to be unchanged after 53,000 years of human habitation of the continent. Much more is known about the richly diverse cultures of modern Aboriginal Australians, or at least of those few who survived the impact of European colonization. Australian Aborigines are the indigenous peoples of Australia . Their ancestors probably arrived in Australia just over 50,000 years ago, although the date remains uncertain.

»
Australia is slowly getting over its cultural cringe, and the white-bread Australia that Barry Humphries began railling against in the 50s has long gone. Experimental groups are pushing the boundaries of ideas (and taste) in all aspects of the arts and taking their efforts to the global stage. Australians are taking the leads in Hollywood , galleries of Australian art line the streets of London and New York and its musicians export new sounds across the oceans. Australia 's image as a sports-mad nation still rings true, but you're likely to end up talking football during an interval at the theatre and diuscussing the latest gallery trends between innings at the cricket.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people are the         indigenous (native) people of Australia . At the time of first         contact with the European colonists in the late 18th century,         most Aborigines were hunter-gatherers with a complex oral         culture and spiritual values based upon reverence for the land         and a belief in the Dreamtime.

In Australia , popular culture generally rules supreme: in         particular the film and television industries (now both         seriously threatened by proposed changes to trade laws), and         the music industry, which make some claims to developing an         indigenous style.

» Australia has had a significant school of painting  since the early days of European settlement, and Australians with international reputations include Sidney Nolan , Russell Drysdale, and Arthur Boyd —not to mention the prized work of many Aboriginal artists. There are excellent art galleries  (even in surprisingly small towns); a rich tradition in ballet, enlivened by the legacy of Dame Margot Fonteyn  and Sir Robert Helpmann ; a strong national opera company, Opera Australia , made prominent by the world renowned diva Joan Sutherland; and symphony orchestras in all capital cities, in particular the Melbourne and Sydney symphony orchestras.
